Police in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1 have detained a Vietnamese American Legal Permanent Resident after the U.S. Consulate General suspected him of fraud.
The man allegedly provided the city police with false information about the loss of his Legal Permanent Resident, known more popularly as the “green card,” the U.S. Consulate General in HCMC said in a statement Wednesday.
He then obtained a police report about the loss of his green card in the city, and submitted it with an application to the U.S. Consulate General in HCMC to return to the United States, the consulate said in a new statement.
But the Consulate General found out later that he was lying, so it notified the police, and the man was subsequently arrested last week.
A preliminary investigation showed that he may have sold his green card.
Falsifying the loss of a green card or not providing truthful information to a U.S. Consular or Federal Law Enforcement Officer is a serious offense that can affect one’s immigration status.
